Prospering in the Summer Heat

WOW! Is it ever hot! Who could have guessed the brutal summer heat would come this early and this fast. The key to success this season will be constant, thorough watering and adding a bit more nutrition than you normally might. Fertilizers, whether organic or non organic types, will deplete quicker with more waterings. I recommend using it twice as often as normal. Your plants will thank you for it. We are getting a lot of questions about zucchini right now. The first blooms are always male pollinating flowers and the second set are the female - so don't worry about not getting squash off the first ones. Most tomatoes are looking exceptional this season. We haven't seen a lot of blight yet. To keep them clean and free of blight, now is the time to use Bonide 'Liquid Copper' fungicide. It is earth friendly, easy to use and it works. If you see blossom end rot on tomatoes, just throw that fruit away as soon as you see it - it happened a long time ago. Blossom end rot occurs at pollination and is not a disease so it cannot spread. Come and visit our Tomato Trial Field and compare results. We plant four of each variety that we raise (over 50). We never spray them, so you can easily see and compare to your plants. The field will remain open throughout the season and each variety is clearly marked for you. Mark your calendar for our Tomato Fair on Saturday, August 1 from 9 am - 1 pm. A new addition to our Tomato Fair lineup: Naturalist Jason Watson from Burr Oak Woods Nature Center will display and encourage ideas for repelling animals in your garden! Don't miss this fair; it is considered one of the best in the country! We have adjusted our hours for the summer season as follows: Monday through Friday 9 am - 6 pm and Saturday 9 am - 5 pm. We are closed on Sundays in July and August. It's time to have fun and enjoy the produce of your gardens and the colors of your flowers (don't forget get to remove old blossoms - we call this deadheading - to keep them blooming beautifully). I'll be adding more hints in a couple of weeks. Keith
