Late Summer Gardening

Keith @ Monday, August 3, 2009

August 3rd...already? I hope you all enjoyed visiting with Jasper Mirabile, Larry Moore and Toby Tobin at our Farrand Farms' Tomato Fair this past Sat. I think Jasper inspired us all with his Mozzarella Cheese demonstration. Larry Moore shares such a great passion for gardening and tomatoes in general. Thanks to all! Always feel free to come anytime and visit our tomato trial field. We like to share.

Most flowers and vegetables are looking great this year. The cooler July temperatures have allowed the flowers to maintain a high sugar content and thus, a more intense color. The downside to the cooler night temperatures is that the tomatoes are slow to ripen. Don't give up! You will soon be harvesting many.

Now is the time to fertilize strawberries and other spring blooming perennials and fruits. Treat them well now an they'll be happy to return the favor next spring. Also, keep feeding those pots and baskets for great blooms right up until frost.
Don't forget mums, asters and montauk daisies, they will be ready around Sept. 1. Iris divisions arrive in mid-August and fall bulbs arrive the second week of Sept.
Great things to look forward to!
Many of you have asked what is going on out in front of Farrand Farms. We are remodeling our perennial area. We've already completed new water lines and drains and will soon begin laying new side walks. Please keep an eye out for our windmill too! Change is good!
Got to go - believe it or not, it is time to plant our Christmas poinsettias. We start tomorrow by planting 13,000 of them! Please remember us when you are planning a holiday event or decorating your church.
See you in a couple of weeks.
