The Best of Times . . . . .

Keith @ Friday, September 11, 2009

Fall is absolutely the best time to plant! This fall is starting out wonderfully. Temperatures are slightly cooler than normal and the rain is more timely and plentiful than ever. Plants and bulbs couldn't ask for more perfect weather to begin.

We still have a few outstanding apple trees from Bailey's. Pick up some perennial grasses and other popular perennials in one gallon containers. Plant now so they can build their roots for a great display next season.

Don't forget, now is the time to get your fall bulbs in the ground. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocus will reward you come spring. We always have the best grade available (and they do look superior this year!)- no box store seconds here. You'll do well by simply adding a tablespoon of earth friendly bone meal (or any bulb fertilizer) to get them started off right. Remember, never put the fertilizer directly in the hole - ALWAYS add it on the soil surface and just slightly cover it with your fingers. The rain will take it to the roots.

You still have a wee bit of time (until about mid-September) to plant leafy fall garden crops like lettuce and radishes. Spinach can be planted until late October. This year, we have green onion sets for fall planting. It's also time to plant garlic for next summer's harvest. Top quality Montauck Daisies, colorful mums, asters and pansies are ready for you. We also have pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and straw for your fall decorating.

Many folks are continuing to ask about our new perennial shopping beds. Our redesign is coming along great and will offer some very special surprises. Please visit us often so you can witness the changes. In the next few weeks, you'll see a fun and unique wind powered surprise rise skyward. Keep your eyes open!

Got a question? Feel free to e-mail me at keith@farrandfarms.com. While I won't be able to respond to everything, I will definitely highlight a question or two on this page every couple of weeks.
Now, isn't it time you went outside? Remember, Fall is the Best of times . . . .
