Spring is not quite here yet, but it is just around the corner. Be careful not to let unseasonably warm temperatures coax you into beginning your planting too early. You may wish to review our 'Recommended Planting Schedule' (see below) for average safe times to plant in the Kansas City area. No one will ever be able to know exactly what the weather will do, but our schedule will give you a basic guide.
Early March (around the 10th-15th) is the time to begin your root crops - radishes, onions, asparagus and potatoes. Pansies, violas and cole crops (like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce) are usually safe around March 20th. Don't begin your warm weather seeds until late March. Tomatoes and peppers will become leggy and weak if started too early inside. They generally shouldn't be planted in the garden until late April.
I would also like to thank all of you for your kind words, prayers and support that you offered us during the passing of my father, Ken, in January. He was the third generation of Farrands and was such a vital part of making our greenhouses and farm what it is today.
We are missing his daily visits, but he stays alive within us.
